Digestive and Visceral Complaints

Treatment at Bridge to Health
On careful questioning during the case history, we find that many patients with lower back pain also have digestive tract complaints – ranging from bloating and occasional diarrhoea / constipation to more unpleasant ongoing conditions such as diverticulitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), etc.
Indeed postural changes, imbalances and restrictions may impinge on both nerve and blood supply to the gastro-intestinal tract, and there are equally some strong structural connections between for instance the pelvic joints and the ascending and descending colon.
Structural work on the musculoskeletal frame frequently has a beneficial impact on digestive and genito-urinary tract function; equally, physical examination of the abdomen may point to the desirability of visceral osteopathic treatment, which equally has a good track record of alleviating symptoms and sometimes also causes of digestive tract complaints.
As holistic osteopaths and trained dieticians, we also have a keen interest in looking at our patients’ diet, medication history and lifestyle, as it will very often provide both an explanation and a cure to their gastro-intestinal symptoms.
