The benefits of massage for Stress

Stress is universal and it’s not always bad. Whenever you feel especially energetic before a meeting or hit the brakes in time to avoid a car accident, stress is doing its job. However, when there's never any relief from stress, your body and mind can be really affected.

Relaxing massages such as Swedish or lomi-lomi are one of the most effective methods to unwind. From a physiological point of view, research has shown that massage can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, relax your muscles and increase the production of endorphins, your body's natural "feel good" chemicals. Serotonin and dopamine are also released through massage, and the result is a feeling of calm relaxation that makes chronic or habitual as well as acute or short-term stress much easier to overcome.

Clinical studies show that even a single one hour session can significantly lower cortisol levels and insulin levels -- which explains why massage therapy and stress relief go hand-in-hand.

From a psychological aspect, just taking some time for yourself is a step towards being more relaxed. Nowadays we are busy most of the time - too busy! It can be from work or our personal lives and it feels like we are constantly under pressure. The fact that we are all obsessed by our mobile phones doesn’t help either. We are always contactable even when sometimes we would like just a little time for ourselves.

Massage is a time to unplug. Literally!

Switch off your phone and take a deep breath. Unfortunately we can’t switch off our thoughts the same way but we can choose what we think about. A good tip to reduce stressful thoughts during a massage is to focus on your breathing and/ or the actual massage. Focus on the part of the body where your therapist is working and visualise your skin getting softer, your muscles melting. I know it can sounds a bit strange but it does work or you can simply enjoy the relaxing music and the lovely smell of oils that your therapist uses.
