Cranial Osteopathy for Babies
Cranial osteopathy and/or craniosacral therapy is a very gentle and safe form of treatment that is particularly useful when working with children. It might help babies that have had a difficult birth or are unsettled and restless. During the birth process, the baby is exposed to many physical and emotional challenges. In particular their head and neck might have been compressed during the process of labour.Although the baby’s head has a remarkable ability to accommodate and absorb these stresses, some of the compressions experienced might remain beyond birth and can affect the baby on many levels.
During assessment and treatment we observe how these retained compressions or stresses are expressed and may affect the baby’s ability to cope and thrive. Supporting the baby’s body system in releasing some of these held tensions can help the body to naturally re-balance itself, find a more settled state and potential deeper relaxation.
During a course of cranial osteopathic treatment, parents may observe various changes in their children including less irritability or colicky crying and improvements in sleep. However, as we are all unique, reactions to treatment are variable. Although most are very relaxed after a treatment, others might have a burst of energy or feel temporarily unsettled due to the new situation and experienced changes.
Osteopaths must keep monitoring the progress of a child and will always ensure that if advisable, patients seek appropriate medical advice and treatment for their baby alongside any osteopathic treatment to make sure best care is provided.
