Let Us Introduce You to the Emmett Technique
Emmett Technique: A Gentle Approach to Helping the Body Move Better
If you experience muscle tension, restricted movement, discomfort or a feeling that your body is not moving as freely as it should, the Emmett Technique may be exactly what you are looking for!
But what exactly is it, and what can you expect from a session?
What is the Emmett Technique?
The Emmett Technique is a gentle form of bodywork that uses light pressure holds and tactile switches on specific points of the body to help encourage comfortable movement.
These holds and switches are designed to provide the body with information that may help it reassess and adapt when experiencing restrictions, imbalances or pain.
The aim is to help the body find greater ease, balance and freedom of movement.
How Does the Emmett Technique Work?
‘It’s a kind of magic!’ - most people’s response who have had Emmett Technique
The body is constantly receiving and responding to information. When we experience stress, injury, repetitive movement strain, tension or changes in our posture, the way we move can sometimes become restricted or less efficient.
By applying gentle pressure to specific points, the technique aims to help the nervous system and muscles reset whatever coping patterns they had adapted to, bringing the affected movements back in to balance.
Many people describe the treatment as subtle but surprisingly effective. Some notice changes in their movement during the session, while others become aware of changes afterwards.
Here at Bridge to Health, the Emmett Technique can be applied as a stand alone treatment or complimentary to any Pilates or movement rehabilitation sessions that you may be attending. Hayley, our Pilates teacher and Movement Rehabilitation Specialist will always advise you first if she thinks it may be of benefit and ask for your permission before the bodywork is applied.
What Happens During Emmett Technique?
The treatment is generally gentle and non-invasive.
We will begin by asking about your movement and areas of discomfort. You may then be asked to perform simple movements so that we can observe how your body is functioning or not functioning in some cases!
The technique may be carried out while you are standing, sitting or lying down, depending on what is appropriate for you.
You may be asked to notice how your body feels and if you feel your movement patterns have changed throughout the treatment. Once each move has been applied, the initial movement patterns will be re-assessed to see if any changes have occurred.
Who Might Benefit From the Emmett Technique?
People seek out the Emmett Technique for many different reasons, including:
Feeling stiff or restricted in their movement
Muscle tension
Reduced mobility
Postural changes
Movement imbalances
A desire for a gentle approach to bodywork
Every person is different, and your experience will depend on your individual body, movement patterns and circumstances.
What Does Emmett Technique Feel Like?
Because the technique uses gentle pressure, treatment is generally not intended to be painful.
You may notice sensations such as warmth, relaxation, a feeling of release or changes in how a particular movement feels. Sometimes the changes can be subtle, while at other times people notice a difference quite quickly.
The most important thing to be certain of is that the treatment will be tailored to you. Always let us know how you are feeling throughout the session.
